About the Living Tao Foundation

Chungliang Al Huang has been teaching Tai Ji wisdom and helping students feel their way towards the Tao for over 50 years with his unique combination of epic wisdom and playful authenticity and joy. Studying with Chungliang is a heart-opening dive into deeper resonance with the Tao. Through brushwork, breath, and music, Chinese characters come alive as energies that we can inhabit and dance with our bodies. We dance the hero’s journey and find new gateways and openings within ourselves.

Chungliang’s Living Tao Foundation was established in 1978 as a nonprofit organization devoted to East/West cultural synthesis, as a network for lifelong learning. From its home temple in Gold Beach, Oregon, it continues to support the creation of Tai Ji events and seminars applying ancient wisdom to modern living through the world.

While attending a Qi Gong workshop led by Chungliang at Esalen, we noticed that in addition to his bejeweled scholar’s belt—a parting gift from Alan Watts—Chungliang often wears a fantastic T-shirt featuring his calligraphy when he teaches. Longtime students among us were also wearing a variety of these calligraphic expressions of qi with pleasure. When Chungliang opened the floor for questions, our hands shot up. “How do we get a T-shirt?”

“Oh, you mean a qi-shirt?” Chungliang replied with a wink.

The whole room laughed and wanted to know, too. The shirts had been out of print for many years. And so a revival project began.

We are cooperating with the Living Tao Foundation to make this new wave of shirts. Chungliang generously provided new artwork and we have borrowed images and drawings from past publications to share on this website. Profits from the sales are donated to the organization. We hope these qi-shirts invite you to smile and to dance.
